Frontier Chemistry Project

This medical resource guide will give simple ways to heal and treat maladies using flora from the Eastern Deciduous Forrest and Tall Grass Prairie. It will identify the active chemical ingredients in the plants as well as the common name and Genus/Species name. It will also show the chemical structure of the active ingredient. It will tell the habitat the plant is found in along with the season it can be found growing in. And the uses of the plant will also be mentioned. It will show the preparation of the plant. And include 15 photos of different plants.

  • Identifying the plant is extremely important. If you identify incorrectly it could be very dangerous and you could get severely hurt. Also your malady wouldn't be cured.
  • It would be important to know a variety of plants from other regions because if you end up in a region you're unfamiliar with then you could end up using the wrong plant to try to cure the malady, or you might eat something toxic that could harm you.
  • It would make a significant difference depending on the season you were traveling in because some plants only grow in specific seasons. This would limit the amount of plants available to you.
  • As a scientist it would be significant to develop a relationship with local people about their plant habitat because they could teach you more about the plant and even where you could find the plant.
  • If I was without traditional medicines, I would trust my knowledge of local flora to treat an illness or disease, because I have researched these plants and I know what chemical ingredients are in them and the effects they will have on me.

  1. Thank you, Tyler, for sharing your opinion on whether you would trust your own knowledge of local flora to treat illness. I agree with you because if it is life or death, anything should be tried in order to survive.
